Caribbean Spirituality by Josh Sessoms
Artist of Caribbean descent, Josh Sessoms, wants to use his art to make Caribbean diaspora remember their roots - where they came from. He does this pretty effectively through his art showing us in glaring terms one of the ways art can be powerful.
His works are fully of mystery - otherworldly and ancient with traditional, sacred (and most likely spiritual) sculptures which would be very much in place in a Juju man’s shrine. Spiritual masks, traditional pans, local fabric, African-based font, and many more, dominate his works, all brought together in a beautiful way that makes you think about the ‘real’ Caribbean and the spirituality and religions they took with them from Africa.
He also uses coloured pencil on paper, a method that we don’t see as often as we’d like with professional artists.
