Contemporary Hair by Medina Dugger
Photographer, Medina Dugger, shows off contemporary, creative Nigerian hairstyles with her Chroma photo series. Dugger was inspired by post-colonization photographer J.D. Ojeikere whose documentation of ‘60s traditional hairstyles in Lagos is still catching eyes even today.
But where Ojeikere has a documentary-style, archival feel, Dugger has gone the contemporary route, filling her images with pops of colour - from pink backgrounds contrasting with purple hairs and yellow outfits.
But clearly, the hairstyles that Dugger showcases are the Stars of each image in the series. And rightly so because Nigerian women take their hair seriously. With the increasing use of weaves and ‘attachments’, showcasing creativity with hair knows no bounds. Check out some of these creative styles below.
