Culture Clash with Joseph Eze
Nigerian contemporary artist, Joseph Eze, has been known for his beautiful mixed media works that celebrate women as well as portray the differences between Nigerian and Western culture.
His latest collection, Salvator Ora, is a glaring and unapologetic examination of these difference. In fewer places will you see the contrast between Nigerian culture and that of the Western (British) colonisers. Each piece here has a central subject, in glorious British garb of old, but carrying out activities that are distinctly Nigerian - from selling food and local medicine in plastic bottles on the roadside, to cobblers that walk the neighbourhood hoping for someone to call for their services. How does this make you feel?
Eze uses acrylic paint as well as newspaper, foil and gift wraps on canvas to create these thought-provoking images. See some of them below.
