Minimalist Portraits by Sungi Mlengeya

Tanzanian artist, Sungi Mlengeya, creates minimalist but powerful portraits of women who she has met, and who are around her. Mlengeya primarily uses acrylic on canvas to depict beautiful Black women, oozing strength through their determined gazes and giving strength to each other.

Her work prominently features vast white spaces around the women. This is arguably one of the most striking aspects of her work because it depicts the freedom to be and do whatever the women want to be - they can fill that space up with their dreams and accomplishments.
