The American Dream by Kadir Nelson
In the midst of adversity, strive, inequality and disillusion about what it means to have ‘The American Dream’, Kadir Nelson sparks hope in the hearts of anyone lucky enough to see his paintings. In the thick of police brutality against Black men, the African-American artist created ‘American Uprising’, a painting depicting the sentiment of most people - an inspiring piece that got our blood boiling for justice. It showed that everyone has it in them to fight for justice, in any little way they can, even if it’s ‘just’ in a protest.
Kadir similarly inspired people with his ‘Sweet Liberty’ piece for The New Yorker, bringing to life a young girl, looking on hopefully but with her sleeves rolled up in readiness to go to work for the liberty she’s looking forward to.
Kadir’s unique style of rich tonal palettes and surrealism brings these ideas and feelings to life. Even as he creates a picture of what could be with a bit of hope, he also constructs the joy that is right here - a little boy enjoying a popsicle; a whole lot of love in a simple hug in the park; or a wholesome sunny day in the park with dad.
No matter what, each of his artworks are infused with feeling! It’s no wonder that The New Yorker goes back to him over and over again.
