The Woman Code by Asiko

African photographer, Asiko, blesses us with a unique show of self-expression for women. He bases his ‘The Woman Code’ photo series on the rich history of Yoruba women in western Nigeria - in a time when they did not have a public voice in the community (an issue that many women are still grappling with even today).

But no one can be without self-expression, it’s a fundamental human right after all. This suppression led the women to use patterns and designs on the Adire cloth they are so well known for creating. These patterns meant something, each with its own hidden meaning.

In The Woman Code, Asiko takes these patterns and transposes them onto the skins of women - an ultimate form of self-expression. See the series below and let us know what you think below.
