About Africa With Aida Muluneh

Ethiopian photographer, Aida Muluneh, needs no introduction. First, her influence on African photography has been felt across the continent and beyond - from establishing the first significant photography festival, the Addis Foto Festival (AFF), to playing key roles in several Biennials. Second, her routine collaboration with African and global organisations to use art to raise awareness about development issues affecting Africa is a core part of her work as an artist.

But one of the most appealing things about her work is how Aida depicts issues such as poverty, war, droughts, famine in a vastly different way than the typical photojournalism. She does this by telling stories - using symbolism, afrofuturism, and minimalism in a new a refreshing way - for example, body paint is a prominent signature depicting traditional customs and ideals that live on despite constant strive.

All the above combined produce an effect that is as powerful as a single bloom in the desert, and that is recognisable anywhere as coming from the mind of Aida Muluneh. See a few of our favourites below.
