Everyday Women with Ndidi Emefiele

We’re not sure how colours can be vibrant and muted at the same time, but Ndidi Emefiele manages to ace this combination with her uniquely styled, large works of art.

You may also not initially realise it, but Emefiele uses a variety of well-placed mixed media in her creations. Imagine the surprise of noticing that the lenses in her images are actually real. That’s only one of the subtle brilliances of her work.

A more obvious detail is her proportionally off female subject. Again, we’re not sure how a bulbous head manages to be attractive, but there you have it with Emefiele. Attractive it still is.

The Nigerian artist depicts Black women simply going through life in general e.g. transiting on the train, visiting the beauty shop, having a party with themselves and with friends, relaxing at home. Going through life in general and being comfortable in their skin, no matter what. This is what we all aspire to.

Ultimately, Emefiele positions women at the centre of the narrative, a position that society constantly tries to keep them from. Most of the women also have eye glasses on - which Emefiele illustrates as self-protection from the many dangers and issues that face women every day.
