Cameroonian Pop Culture by Neals Niat

French-Cameroonian artist, Neals Niat, has been bringing us beautiful, colourful illustrations about life and pop culture in Cameroon. It’s a delight to go through his Instagram page because of the stories he tells along with the images. For example, there is a couple pretending to each other that they are rich (from his Mapenes Love series) - a trend that’s ongoing in Cameroon and many parts of the world (especially with the rise of social media and Influencers).

But even more important than the light, playful nature of his pop art is the fact that Niat’s work is improving representation of black people and African culture in mainstream art. It’s also opening up people’s minds to pop culture in Africa.
