Natalia Murobha Illustrations

With a Tanzanian dad, a Russian mum, and living in Scandinavia, Natalia Murobha knows what it feels like to not quite fit in, to be different and even be constantly abused by people who don’t look like her. It’s no wonder then, that her beautiful illustrations feature Black people who have worked/are working to uplift Black culture - e.g. portraits of C.J. Walker, Winnie Harlow, Grace Johns, amongst others who she personally knows and admires.

Natalia’s narratives along with her images are also beautifully intense. She shares thoughts and notes about her life which makes her works even more touching. She also talks about social issues in a place where people want to ‘silence your Blackness for their comfort’. Her portraits showcase this - they are in a distinct style where the subjects’ skin glosses and shines, clearly showing that the Black skin is worn proudly and unapologetically.
