Satire and Society by Michael Soi
Michael Soi always packs a punch. The Kenyan artist is not afraid to show the issues and trends in Kenyan society that no one wants to talk about in public. He tackles everything from China’s economic invasion of Africa, to prostitution and sexualization of women, and Pastors visiting strip clubs.
For example, Soi’s ‘Heaven Can Wait’ series is a satirical crack at how people have the wildest fun, living and drinking in the moment without a care for tomorrow. He also has a 100-painting satirical series called ‘China Loves Africa’ about China economically milking Africa dry by entering into unfair deals - a highly controversial series that has given Soi much publicity.
Soi’s style is reminiscent of the local barbershop art that you would find in many sub-saharan African barbershops, especially in the good old days. This is part of what gives him a unique appeal and sets him apart from other artists.
