Stories of Ancestors by Paul Lewin
Jamaican-born, American artist, Paul Lewin, makes us contemplate our ancestors with his beautiful, intricate paintings. Our ancestors from centuries past, and our ancestors for centuries to come. His works feature women of old, or from the future, who are literally one with nature. Even the iron-like armor they wear seems to not be dead metallic tech, but something organic that also came from nature.
Plants and wildlife are intertwined with the women. And so too are charms and amulets from their traditional arts - all perfectly mixed and in harmony. Lewin mentions that his ideas are like dreams, inspired by the African and Afro-Caribbean stories his father told him. That’s also the feeling each piece of work gives us - like it was brought to life from a dreamy, afro-futuristic, world which could fit equally perfectly in the past and in the future.
