Deborah Segun's Deep Playfulness
Deborah Segun is a Nigerian artist who has embodied such a twist in portraiture that you can’t help but identify her work at first glance. At that first glance, Deborah’s work seems playful because of her clever use of colours that pop! But keep looking and you also get a sense of depth, as though she is conveying much deeper thoughts and feelings about womanhood.
Her depictions of the Black woman give a sense of unapologetic curves and volume. Unapologetic because despite her subject’s size, she gives off a content vibe. What’s more, comfort, friendship and solidarity ooze out of many of Deborah’s paintings - whether it’s women in close contact, hugging and giving each other strength, or a sole subject sitting peacefully and just loving herself.
We absolutely love her works; just a few of our favourites are below.
