The Southern Experience by Lynthia Edwards

American artist, Lynthia Edwards, creates these beautifully distorted collages using inspiration from her childhood in the American South, as well as the stories and experiences of Black girls in the region.

Many of her creations feature black and white photos of girls in the 50s and 60s. With the contrast from colourful cutouts and watercolour across the images calling even more attention to the history and old stories that permeate Lynthia’s work. The gazes of Edward’s girls project a wealth of experience, suggesting a hard life, but a resilient one already, despite their young ages.
